The Best RPG Games For PC and Online

I love all kinds of RPGs. I’ve played every type of the best RPG games ever created. The primary kinds of RPGs that I have played though are on the PC, for console systems, or are pen and paper RPGs. I think these are the three primary categories where you can play RPGs. Some of these categories can be divided into sub-categories. For example, you could divide the PC category into single-player RPGs, online RPGs, massive multiplayer online RPGs, free RPGs, etc. There are so many categories and sub-categories of RPGs that it can make it really difficult to pick the best RPG games for a particular niche. Today, I wanted to focus on what I consider to be some of the best RPG games for PC.

The Best RPG PC Games
I’ve played a lot of PC RPGs and MMORPGs in my day. So I wanted to develop a list of the best RPG PC games that I’ve played. In general, I really enjoy playing MMORPGs, traditional PC RPGs, and any popular RPG series. Here are some examples of each category that I’ve enjoyed playing over the years.

MMORPGs
World of Warcraft – This is the MMORPG of all MMORPGs. I can honestly say I disliked World of Warcraft when I started playing it. But the fact that everyone I knew was playing it kept me interested. So I gutted it out and stuck with the game for a couple years and really grew to like it. It has like ten bazillion subscribers and is firmly entrenched as the number one MMORPG in the world. It is definitely one of the best RPG games out there, if not THE game.

Warhammer Online – War was marketed as a potential WoW killer when it came out. It definitely was not that, but it delivered a new MMORPG that was more PvP-focused. The game is alive and kicking and is probably the best alternative to World of Warcraft if you are looking for a newer fantasy MMORPG that is PvP-focused.

Dark Age of Camelot – DAoC was the game that got me into MMORPGs. It had decent PvE but was completely PvP-focused end-game, which is my big focus with MMORPGs. The one thing they did better than any other game so far was their realm vs. realm PvP using a three-side system. Using three different sides for players allowed for much easier and better balance on each server. It also allowed for a ton of different and fun classes and group make-ups for people to play. Even as old as it is, DAoC is still a great MMORPG.

Best RPG Games for PC
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – I love the Star Wars universe and KotOR was a groundbreaking game for LucasArts. It allowed you to really play a Jedi the way you wanted to play them. It also gave you the choice of whether you wanted to go towards the light side or the dark side, and you paid the consequence for either. It spawned a sequel game as well as games that were created for that era. BioWare and LucasArts are currently working on an MMORPG based on this original game which will be called, Star Wars: The Old Republic (TOR). I predict it will be one of the best online RPG games ever.

Diablo – Some people may not consider Diablo a true RPG. I definitely think it has all the elements of an RPG, but at its core it probably feels and looks a lot more action-based. Diablo could be played solo on your PC or online with a small group of friends. So it wasn’t a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, but it had a lot of the same essentials that an MMORPG does.

Final Fantasy – This game series is probably the most successful and best RPG game series of all-time. Final Fantasy has always been both a huge hit in Japan and the United States. They’ve created tons of games not only for the PC but for consoles as well. Final Fantasy XI is also a very popular MMORPG that has been out for several years now and is still going strong.

Might & Magic – I’ll always have a soft spot for the Might & Magic series. I first played Might & Magic on my Apple IIe when I was a little kid. Since then, I can’t say I’ve played every single game in the series and spin-off series, but I’ve played a lot of them. This is the one of the best RPG games for the PC that I grew up playing. Unfortunately it didn’t keep that same following that it had many years ago, but it has been a steady seller since its inception. I get a little nostalgic every time I see this game title.

Overall – Best RPG PC Games
Choosing the best RPG game for the PC is going to drastically depend on what type of player you are and what type of game you like. I know a lot of my choices are what other people consider to be some of the best RPG games ever. World of Warcraft and the Final Fantasy series are some of the best-selling and most iconic games of all-time. There are also a lot of other great RPGs that didn’t make my short list.

What do you think are the best RPG PC games ever?

  1. the best mmorpg would have to be world of warcraft. iv quit wow and restarted lik 3 times. iv done hours an hours of research an trial versions of games. wow is the best mmorpg. at least for me. but for handhelds. i thought the pokemon series is the best. its easy to get into but can be dificult. and the replay value is amazing. i mean u can play through 3 times at least. and you can go throught again years later. what makes an rpg great is the experience. the journey. and wow and pokemon really do that greatly. i playes a little final fantasy. and not to say theyr bad games. but i dont really see why theyr amazing? maybe its cus iv played wow before FF series so i dont really enjoy turn based games. but idk. just my input. gudluk guys :P play wat u love.

@ John – Thanks for the response, John. World of Warcraft is definitely a great MMORPG and the undisputed king. I haven’t played a lot of the Pokemon games, so it is difficult for me to respond about them. They are obviously incredibly popular though, so they must be doing something right. I think the Final Fantasy games are incredibly popular for a reason, but you’re right in that they don’t have a ton of replay value (in my opinion). Thanks for the comments!

  3. As with Bioware, I really thought Mass Effect was a pretty good RPG. I have played it on the Xbox360, but it is also available for the PC.

@ Matt – I thought Mass Effect was awesome as well. Most of the people I know that played it, though, did so on the XBox 360.

  5. i need some help here,,, i was really into wow but since lvl 80 u cant really solo much, u have to party up, im one of those players that love to solo and do my own thing, can someone recomend a good pc game that u can solo in?
p.s i already played fallout 3 guild wars and oblivion. is there one out there that has free roaming areas like wow but without the party

  6. I also need some help! I have played a RPG a long time ago and I can’t remeber the name as I want to get it again. Here are some elements I remeber from it:
    - You have a shrine (Stonehenge-like) and you can spawn some small creatures that dance around it and they channel mana into your character (they are called mana-whores or something like that)
    - Your character is seen from behind
    - You have a spell that alows you to run fast for a limited time
    - You have to destroy the enemy’s shrine in order to win

    Please help me out !
email me as I asked this question on various sites and i can’t check them all (my email blue.devine(a-t)gmail.com)

  7. @ chris – I would ask you what kind of games do you like to play? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Any information you could give on the different types of games you like would help. I’m sure there are plenty of readers who could make good suggestions if they knew a little more information.

@ HELP – I’m not sure. What system was it on? PC or a console? How long ago did you play it?

  8. @ HELP – the game u lookin for is SACRIFICE.

  9. depends what you’re looking for-
    best browser mmorpg- runescape
    best downloadable mmorpg- perfect world
best sci-fi mmorpg- star wars gakaxies
best bought mmorpg- age of conan
    best 2d mmorpg- aqworlds
best fps/ 1st person shooter mmorpg- quake live
best stategy mmorpg- armies of gelinor
best browser free mmorpg/ with the option to pay- free realms
    overall best- World of Warcraft

  10. #1: “D2/LoD”
Comon!!!, nuf said, this is the BEST ever Action-MMORPG -it invented the word “MMORPG” -thankyou. It’s the oldest, and the most legendary-reigning king of all MMORPG’s.

    #2: “Guild Wars”
Following in the great D2/LoD tradition of graphical quality, and AI excellence is none other than yup, GW, it is the SUPER-MMO of the RPG’s.

    #3: “WoW”
…ya whatever, great, wow, …, but because I need daddy’s credit card to pay greedy-Blizzard monthly fees just to play WoW, this one stays below my top two. And mostly because Blizzard couldn’t even get Diablo 3 out ???!!!

  11. I have enjoyed playing diablo 2 and titan quest IT. Are there are other games out there that are very similar to these games? I don’t play online much moslty by myself on the PC, but I like tackling different monsters and collecting and upgrading on weapons and armor
    Thanx

  12. Seriously…I agree with Rickster. Before saying that Wow is the “wow” of all times, read the mail. Google search for top sales, the numbers will speak for themselves. Diablo rulled the all, ever since 1997. Wow is cartoonish, a little blood and … yeah, well, whatever. If not for the fights, it could pass for an educational game. It looks great because it’s online. LoD is also online. And it’s better. Plus…tell me, how many enjoy playing Warcraft 1 or 2? Not many. Just hysterical kids that spend all day long between the four walls of their room, kickin’ the hell out of that poor mouse. On the other side, see how many people are playing Diablo 1 or 2. Google search!

  13. Is there any medieval-magic rpg/mmorpg? likeee gothic,gothic 2,gothic 2 The Night of the Raven,Gothic 3,Gothic 3 Forsaken Gods ??? plz i really like such games :D :X

  14. Try RUNE. It’s pretty old, but brilliant, and really crazy when played on multiplayer.
You might also check Oblivion: Elder Scroll, it’s fantasy but pretty much medieval.
Or, a very old game, action adventure with a world much like Gothic, called Drakan: order of fire

  15. best Rpg + MMORPG:

    DIABLO III

  16. Personally, I have played many RPGs and one of my the best is the Gothic series. There are three that I know of, the third being the largest and by far the best. I should be in the the list of best RPGs.
